How to Pop
Below are instructions for how to pop your kernels. Our preferred method is on the stovetop, either using a saucepan or a whirley-pop popper. It can also be done with a hot-air popper or in the microwave.

Stovetop method

Small Bowl- 1/4 cup kernels & 1 tbsp oil
Large Bowl- 1/3 cup kernels & 1-2 tbsp oil
Family Size- 1/2 cup kernels & 2-3 tbsp oil
Dakotaland Popcorn tip: Using clarified butter instead of oil gives the popcorn a buttery flavor without adding melted butter later. Clarified butter does not smoke or burn in the pan. Olive oil can also be used in place of vegetable oil.
This is our preferred method to pop kernels to produce the fluffiest, most evenly popped popcorn. These steps will work with a pan or any stove-top popper.
Step 1: Set your stove on medium heat. Too much heat will cause the kernels to pop with less volume. Add oil or clarified butter and let it coat the bottom of the pan.
Step 2: As the oil heats up, drop a few kernels in and cover the pan. When they begin to pop, you will know the oil is hot enough to add the rest of the kernels.

Step 3: Add the rest of the kernels and swirl the pan to mix the oil and kernels.
Step 4: As the kernels begin to pop, shake the pan incrementally to keep the popped kernels from sticking to the bottom.

Step 5: Once the popping slows to a few seconds between pops, quickly pour into a bowl. Don't wait too long, it's better to have a few un-popped kernels than to burn the whole batch!

Step 6: Before the popcorn cools, shake in salt or seasoning to taste and toss bowl to incorporate.

Microwave Popcorn in a Bowl

Don't feel like turning on your stove? No problem! All you need is a microwave safe glass bowl, a microwave safe plate, and a microwave. Place the kernels (with a little clarified butter or oil) in the bowl, cover the bowl with the plate, and microwave on high for 3 to 5 minutes. Stop when you hear the popping slow to a few seconds apart. Be careful; the plate and bowl are hot!
